Augmented reality, which uses your smartphone as a window to display “enhancements” to the world through its camera, is pretty hot right now. You can use it with Google Goggles to Google the world, or use it with Yelp to find the nearest restaurants.  In 2009, there was an explosion of interest  in bringing augmented reality applications and browsers to mobile devices with GPS, cameras and compasses.
